The introduction of NEEFs Micro Irrigation Loan has enabled women and youths to step into farming with a renewed hope, no longer delayed and frustrated by unpredictable rainfalls and climate change.

At Chiyezi Irrigation Scheme in Malembo, Lilongwe, 25-year-old Chikayiko Msaka who was a recent Form Four candidate from Malembo Community Day Secondary School cultivated five (5) acres of maize and beans after accessing irrigation loan equipments from NEEF.

Msaka who is a proud son of Mkaka Village, Traditional Authority Chiwaula, Chikayiko has found renewed hope and revived his dreams through irrigation farming. โ€œI used to fear planting my maize because the rains did not come on time. But now, with this loan, I can irrigate throughout the season. My maize and beans are doing well, and I am certain of a big harvest. My future looks bright again,โ€ he said, beaming with confidence.

A similar story is unfolding in Kawere Village, T/A Masumba Nkhunda in Lilongwe, where Chiyesamoyo Cooperative has become a symbol of resilience. Mtchaisi Kayedzeka, a member of the group, shared how irrigation has reshaped her householdโ€™s prospects. โ€œWe are no longer worried about hunger,โ€ she said proudly. โ€œWith irrigation, I will harvest enough for my family and sell the surplus. For the first time, we have grown tomatoes, beans, maize, and different vegetables. As women, we feel empowered.โ€

More than 7,000 farmers in Mchinji and North Lilongwe have already accessed the loan. Among them are over 2,000 women and 2,000 youths, with men accounting for just over 3,000 beneficiaries.

The Micro-Irrigation and Farm Implements loan package includes irrigation pumps, seed, and fertilizers, enabling farmers to plan for year-round production instead of waiting for rainfall.
