For the past 15 years, Emmanuel Mwangailo of Group Village Head Chiwowola under Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga District, has been farming with limited resources on a small piece of land he purchased years ago. Despite his experience and dedication, progress was slow until he heard about the Micro Irrigation Loan offered by the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).
This year, 2025, Mwangailo accessed the Micro Irrigation Farm Implements loan (MIFIL) in early July 2025, and for the first time in his farming business, he has managed to cultivate 45 acres of rice. He describes the opportunity as a turning point in his journey.
โIn all my 15 years as a farmer, this is the first time I have cultivated such a large piece of land. I expect a harvest so big that I will be able to settle all my problems and even sustain myself for the next three years from this yield alone,โ said Mwangailo.
With the loan amounting to K11,250,000, Mwangailo has not only expanded his farming operations but also created employment opportunities for young people and women in his community. โMost young people here are unemployed. By working on my farm, they now have a way to earn income, stay productive, and stay away from alcohol and other bad behaviors,โ he added.
NEEFโs Micro Irrigation Loan is proving to be more than just financial support; it is driving food security, creating jobs, and contributing to economic development and stability in farming communities across the country
