With the increasing impact of climate change, particularly unpredictable and inadequate rainfall, micro irrigation has become a vital solution for ensuring consistent agricultural productivity in Malawi. Recognizing this urgent need, the National Economic Empowerment Fund Limited (NEEF) introduced a Micro Irrigation loan product in 2024.
One of the successful beneficiaries of this initiative is the Mafinga Cooperative, located in Chisenga, Chitipa District. The cooperative comprises of 80 members including men women and youths.
The Cooperative received farm inputs worth MK31.8 million, which they used to cultivate 100 acres of land. The loan package included 200 bags of fertilizer and 800 kilograms of maize seed, addressing their long-standing challenge of inadequate inputs that had previously hindered their farm productivity.
Speaking on behalf of the cooperative, the President of the Mafinga Scheme Mr. Mathias Kanyika said the assistance came at the right time.
“All this while, we struggled to farm due to lack of essential inputs like fertilizer but NEEF came to our rescue. With these inputs, we are confident of achieving a bumper harvest,” he said.
The cooperative has also adopted a diversified farming plan. While maize remains their primary crop, the 100-acre field will also be used to grow beans, Irish potatoes, watermelons, and tomatoes. The crops have shown great progress so far, raising hopes for a favorable harvest this year.
NEEF’s micro-irrigation loan initiative was not only designed to support Malawian farmers economically but also to encourage farmers to adopt water-efficient farming methods that rely on available water bodies rather than erratic rainfall.
