The National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) has launched a micro-irrigation initiative in Traditional Authority Chadza, Lilongwe, aimed at enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Speaking at the launch, NEEF CEO Mr. Humphrey Mdyetseni emphasized the importance of adopting irrigation as a stable and cultural practice, rather than a commodity to be sold.

โ€œThis approach will not only increase food availability but also help reduce prices and generate foreign exchange," he said.
The Director of Agriculture from Lilongwe ADD Mr. Ezra Mbendera, echoed Mr. Mdyetseni's sentiments, noting that the initiative has the potential to significantly impact agricultural productivity in the region.

โ€œCurrently, 22,000 hectares of land in Lilongwe are under cultivation, with a productivity rate of 59% due to limited agricultural equipment. This help has come at the right timeโ€.

Senior Chief Mbedza who represented T/A Chadza, assured that the local leadership will ensure the maximum use of the fertilizers and seeds, as well as provide adequate security for the initiative.

The guest of honor, District Commissioner for Lilongwe district Dr. Lawford Palani, also welcomed the initiative, recognizing its potential to improve agricultural productivity and food security in the region.
As part of the launch, NEEF provided 200 bags of fertilizer, 1,000 kilograms of maize seed, and two solar pumps to the 100 member Msozi cooperative.
