Repaying the micro-irrigation loans introduced by the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) promises to be manageable. NEEF’s micro-irrigation structure allows farmers to work collectively in groups of 50 to 100 members which Thenables them share costs of implements.
NEEF highlighted this initiative during the official launch of the micro-irrigation loan at Kadewere Irrigation Scheme in Traditional Authority Mwambo, Zomba.
Traditional Authority Mwambo expressed confidence in the initiative, stressing that it is well aligned with the community's commitment to improving food security and adopting sustainable farming practices. “This initiative will help end hunger in my area and improve food security” T/A Mwambo expressed gratitude to NEEF.
Speaking at the event, NEEF Chief Executive Officer Mr. Humphrey Mdyetseni emphasized that irrigation should not be treated as a mere commodity but as a sustainable cultural practice that can help transform Malawi’s agricultural sector saying that the model ensures that farmers have the capacity to increase food production.
The Guest of Honour of the day Programs Manager, Mr. Edrick Beneti from Machinga Agricultural Development Division (ADD) said the scheme represents a major step toward improving productivity and self-reliance among local farmers. “It’s not just about farming it’s about empowering communities,” he said.
Beneficiary representative Mr. Godfrey Makwinja expressed optimism that the group structure of the loan ensures smooth repayment and effective implementation. “With each group having 50 to 100 members, the burden is shared, and everyone benefits,” Makwinja explained.
The 83 member Kadewere Irrigation Scheme received 1,280 kilograms of maize seed, 256 bags of fertilizer (comprising 128 NPK and 128 Urea) on loan under the micro-irrigation and farm implements loan product.
