Farmers in Mwiza Village, Sub T/A Chiputula in Chikwawa, have benefited from the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF)โs 2025 Micro-Irrigation Loan Program. Marking the final launch in the nationwide rollout across 13 zones.
At the event in the Shire Valley zone, 84 members of the Limphangwi Irrigation Scheme received 2,000 kilograms of maize seed and 400 bags of fertilizer. The farmers plan to cultivate maize and beans on 200 acres along Limphangwi River.
Gift Njobvu, Chairperson of the irrigation scheme and a loan beneficiary, expressed optimism about the initiative. โOur lives will change for the better with these loans. This program will help us have enough food,โ he said.
NEEF Chief Executive Officer Mr. Humprey Mdyetseni emphasized that the program is a strategic move toward long-term agricultural resilience. โWe aim to strengthen food security and move away from rain-fed dependency, promoting year-round farming and crop diversification,โ he said.
Speaking as guest of honor, Mr. Taurail Francis Mlewah, Programs Manager for Blantyre Agricultural Development Division (ADD), commended the initiative for its broader national relevance. โThese inputs will empower farmersโ lives, and this program will help to achieve the Malawi 2063 goal of having a food-sufficient country,โ he said.
NEEF plans to continue disbursing micro-irrigation loans for the next months to rains begin, enabling thousands of smallholder farmers across Malawi to produce food even in the dry season, positioning agriculture as a pillar of national development.
